Discover the natural beauty and fascinating history of Shanklin Chine, the Isle of Wight’s oldest visitor attraction. Welcoming visitors for more than 200 years, this enchanting tree-lined gorge stretches from Shanklin Old Village down to the beach and Esplanade.
Follow the winding pathways through lush woodland, surrounded by rare plants, wildlife and dramatic rock formations. Along the way, admire two beautiful waterfalls, including the main 45-foot cascade tumbling over the cliff edge.
Shanklin Chine also has an important military history. Its heritage displays tell the story of the Royal Marine Commandos who trained here during the Second World War and the Chine’s role in PLUTO, the wartime pipeline that carried fuel beneath the English Channel.
As dusk falls, the pathways and waterfalls are transformed by the Chine’s evening illuminations, creating an atmospheric experience that feels very different from a daytime visit. Tickets include seven days of free return visits, allowing you to experience both.
Dogs are welcome when kept on leads, and refreshments are available from Café Chine and the historic Fisherman’s Cottage on the seafront.
